A study for oral health status of patients with disabilities in Jeonbuk National University Dental Hospital between 2015-2018

Abstract
Aim: Patients with inherited or acquired disabilities have severe oral health problems. The aim of this study is to analyze chief complaints of the patients with disabilities visiting Jeonbuk National University Dental Hospital and to demonstrate recent data on their oral health status based on the analysis.

Study Design: The retrospective study was performed on 1,773 cases with dental treatment taken at Jeonbuk National University Dental Hospital from 2015 to 2018. The patients¡¯ information including sex, age, types of disability, residence, general anesthesia experience, visiting route, and chief complaints was investigated with their hospital records.

Results: The number of males was 1.4 times bigger than that of females and the group of patients aged between 50 and 59 was the largest. The number of the patients with physical disability was 1.8 times bigger than that of the patients with mental disability. The most common chief complaints were dental caries in the 0-39 years group, periodontal disease in the 40-79 years group, and pathology in the over 80 years group.

Conclusion: As the dental treatment for the disabled has expanded, expectations for the treatment have also increased. Therefore, the training for the skilled and professional dental personnel to treat the disabled is needed according to the characteristics of the patients by their age and disease.
